If you are seeking a career in the power sector, you won’t do any better than Ontario Power Generation (OPG). OPG is responsible for half the power generation in all of Ontario, which translates to dozens of positions and fantastic job security.
This is why people flock to OPG’s career site to apply for positions. If you are one of these people, you need some help getting a leg up on the competition. One way to do so is by learning about the OPG hiring process and pre-employment assessment standards.
Whether you are applying for a technical position in the engineering department or a public facing position in the administrative department, we have the information you need to succeed.
Hiring Process at Ontario Power Generation
Ontario Power Generation describes their hiring process as a 7-step endeavor. It is outlined as:
- Create a Profile
- Search and Apply
- Screening and Shortlisting
- Assessment and Interviewing
- Job Offer
- Pre-employment Conditions
- Onboarding
When you deeply look into each step, it seems that the process is even more intense than the seven outlined steps indicate.
Create a Profile
On the OPG careers website, you will need to create an account and include your contact details, resume, and any other requested documents.
Search and Apply
Once you have created your profile, you can search the site and apply to careers that match your skills, experience, and education. The application process is simple thanks to the data already being added to your profile.
Screening and Shortlisting
This step is done behind the scenes by hiring agents. They will review your application and skills to determine if you match the basic requirements for the position. If you do, you will be added to the shortlist and moved forward to assessments.
Assessment and Interviewing
Shortlisted candidates will need to take aptitude tests and participate in a behavioral interview where your personality, skills, and overall potential is assessed by a panel of interviewers. You will be expected to ask questions about the position at the end of the interview.
Job Offer
Those who succeed in testing and interviewing will receive a job offer.
Pre-Employment Conditions
Your offer of employment is conditional and based on your ability to pass all background screening, drug tests, reference checks, etc.
Onboarding
If conditions are met, you will be given a start date and supplied with any information necessary for a successful start to your OPG career.
Pre-Employment Testing at Ontario Power Generation
When you apply at VIA Rail, you can be certain that you will be taking a pre-employment exam, though the specifics of the exam are determined by the position to which you’ve applied. Two common tests for VIA Rail candidates are mechanical comprehension tests and SHL Cognitive Tests.
Mechanical Comprehension Tests
Mechanical Comprehension Tests focus on your ability to understand physics, how the laws of physics can be applied to solving logical problems, and how utilizing context clues can lead you to appropriate technical answers.
Depending on the level of the position you’ve applied to, you may take one of many different Mechanical Comprehension Tests. Most of these tests are reserved for entry and base-level positions and focus on the candidates ability to learn skills, not their current knowledge of those skills.
There are some more advanced versions of these tests (often referred to as operations tests) that are far more technical and require previous knowledge of engineering and physics to successfully pass.
SHL Cognitive Tests
There are dozens of SHL Cognitive Tests, so the one you take will depend on the career you’re targeting. Some of the most common SHL Cognitive Tests include:
Each of these topics can be covered in a single SHL test, or you may be given a test that only covers a single topic. It is best to prepare for all options to ensure you can pass the exam no matter which questions are asked.
