A Guide to The Pennsylvania Police Exam

Pennsylvania is an incredibly interesting state in the regard of police departments and employment testing. This is because the state has 67 recognized counties and each one has their own police force/ employment testing standards.

If you are looking to begin a career as a police officer in Pennsylvania, it is vital to understand the state-wide standards for testing along with the potential testing standards you may need to meet. Luckily, we have all the information and testing materials you need to ensure that you have the best chance at acing your cadet testing in the state of Pennsylvania.

Which Tests Will I Need to Take to Become a Pennsylvania Police Officer?

Though the choice of tests for cadets will vary based on the county and police force in question, you can guarantee you will be taking the Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT) as a passing score is required for any officer in the state.

Other tests that are commonly used in Pennsylvania police testing are:

  • Law Enforcement Assessment Battery (LEAB) by EB Jacobs
  • National Police Officer Selection Test by Stanards & Associates
  • Next Generation Law Enforcement Exam (NGLEE)

Nelson-Denny Reading Test (NDRT) Information

The NDRT is a reading comprehension exam that sets the standard for reading comprehension and verbal understanding in Pennsylvania’s multiple police forces.

The test has two sections – reading and vocabulary. Each section utilizes written prompts that you must read and evaluate to derive the answer to a multiple choice question.

The reading section will have longer prompts and tests your overall reading comprehension skills. You will have approximately 20 minutes to complete this section of the test and will see between 20 and 28 actual questions.

The vocabulary section involves shorter prompts that focus on your ability to associate word meanings with words that are either synonymous or antonymous. You will have around 15 minutes to answer between 80 and 100 questions.

The overall score is derived from your correct answers only, incorrect answers hold no weight on the score. This means skipping questions you don’t know the answer too is a worse strategy than simply guessing at an answer.

Law Enforcement Assessment Battery (LEAB) Information

The LEAB is a series of exams that are intended to determine your skills and natural abilities and how they pertain to the policing profession.

The sections of the LEAB are:

  • Information Ordering
  • Problem Sensitivity
  • Written Expression
  • Written Comprehension
  • Deductive Reasoning
  • Inductive Reasoning

Information Ordering refers to the ability to assess written data and rules and use them to order and organize information in the requested way or in a sensible timeline.

Problem Sensitivity is an abstract exam that gauges your perception of scenarios and ability to determine when there is a problem in a multitude of situations (the handling of evidence, inconsistencies in witness statements, etc.)

Written Expression and Written Comprehension are both portions of a standard Reading Comprehension test that requires you to analyze written data and show your understanding of vocabulary.

Deductive Reasoning involves taking set rules or premises and using them to draw logical conclusions.

Inductive Reasoning involves using abstract logic to determine patterns and rules from a series of data.

National Police Officer Selection Test (NPOST) Information

The NPOST is a standard knowledge test that tests your reading comprehension, mathematics, and grammar skills. Additionally, the test includes a section on report writing.

The entire test must be complete in 1 hour and 15 minutes and you will not be allowed a calculator during any portion.

Next Generation Law Enforcement Exam (NGLE) Information

The NGLE Exam is both a cognitive skills test and a situational judgement test. You will be given questions from a multitude of sections of testing including reading comprehension, written expression, practical judgement, interpersonal skills, situation handling, work attitude, and more.

The cognitive test has 40 multiple-choice questions while the SJT has 96. The entire test is 3 hours and 15 minutes long and will be taken in a secure testing facility.
