If you are looking for a job in Canada where you can grow, thrive, and make a lifelong career, look no further than Suncor Energy. Suncor Energy is a Canadian integrated energy company that offers thousands of careers to highly skilled Canadian workers. They also offer entry-level positions in accounts and administration that make fantastic starting points for long-term career goals.

To gain one of these positions, you must first go through the proper channels to apply. Read on for tips about the Suncor hiring process along with details regarding pre-employment evaluations and test prep.

Hiring Process at Suncor Energy

  1. Search Positions – There are many different types of positions available through Suncor Energy. These range from basic account and administration to advanced engineering positions. Search through the career page for the position that best matches your skills and experience.
  2. Apply with Resume – Once you have found the position for you, begin filling out the online application. You will need to include an up-to-date and well designed resume in conjunction with the standard application. Before submitting, be certain that your resume reflects the skills required of those in your chosen position.
  3. Await Testing and Interview Scheduling – If your resume and application impress, you will be chosen to move forward with a phone interview. This will likely be scheduled directly through your email, so be sure to watch for details from Suncor Energy’s HR.
  4. Phone Interview – The phone interview is a brief meeting to discuss the details of your resume and allow the hiring rep to get a feel for your personality and communication skills. It is important to practice for this interview so you won’t feel too nervous to properly perform.
  5. Pre-Employment Assessments – After your phone interview, you will be scheduled to take any required pre-employment tests. While the exact test you take will be determined by the positions to which you’ve applied, one of the most common tests for Suncor Energy candidates are Mechanical Aptitude Tests and SHL Exams.
  6. Formal Interview – Passing your assessments will give you a chance to be seen for a second, more formal interview. This will involve a phone or video conference meeting with your hiring manager to discuss your skills, experience, and any assets that make you useful as a member of Suncor Energy. If your interview goes well, the only thing standing between you and your offer is background and drug testing.
  7. Background check – During this part of hiring you may be required to provide references, take a drug test, complete a physical, or even have fingerprinting done for a background check. Do your best to provide only accurate information on any and all documents to ensure this portion goes smoothly.
  8. Receive Formal Offer – If you pass your background and drug test, you may be issued a formal offer. You can counter the offer if you are unhappy with the benefits or pay, but the fastest way to begin working with Suncor Energy is to agree to sign your offer as soon as possible.

Pre-Employment Testing at Suncor Energy

There are dozens of positions available at Suncor Energy, and each one will require specific testing for related skills. Some applicants may need to take exams in their account skills while others may only need a personality test. Mechanical Aptitude Tests and SHL Exams are incredibly common tests issued to Suncor Applicants. One common Mechanical Aptitude Test is the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test.

Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test

This mechanical skills exam is one of the most extensive available. It covers basic areas of engineering and physics such as pulleys, gears, gravitational force, etc. It also covers more complex topics like fluid dynamics, electrical interactions, force, and momentum, etc.

The test is offered in two forms, the Bennet MCT I and the Bennett MCT II. The Bennett MCT II is the more common test and is offered in a digital format. It contains 55 multiple-choice questions and has a 25-minute time limit.

Each question is accompanied by a graphic of some sort to help illustrate the problem. This makes it passable even by those with lower overall reading comprehension.

SHL Exam

The general SHL exam covers topics like deductive reasoning, verbal comprehension, and mathematical comprehension. This wide array of skills is tested through the use of multiple-choice questions based on both written prompts and graphic data.

The number of questions will be determined by the specific subjects you are tested in, but most SHL tests are timed.
