A Guide to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT)

Learning a trade is a great way to support yourself and your family, which is why so many people choose to take on the path of apprenticing under a trade master. Once an apprenticeship is achieved, there will be courses and training to complete. Whether your goals are to learn pipefitting or cosmetology, you will be faced with preliminary exams to gauge your aptitude before being allowed to start any technical training.

In multiple Canadian provinces and territories, those wishing to enter a trade apprenticeship will need to pass the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Exam. This exam is lengthy, timed, and has a lot of nuances based on your desired field. If you’d like to learn more about the AIT exam and how to pass it, just keep reading.

How Many Questions are on The AIT Exam?

The Alberta AIT exam is a 3-hour test that consists of 100 questions spanned over three testing sections: reading, math, and science. Each of the sections will have a variation in the actual questions depending on your industry. That’s why the test is broken into five “clusters,” which correlate to the industry in which the test taker is trying to enter.

Each cluster has an increasing degree of subject coverage and difficulty. This makes it so that each tier automatically provides a “passing score” for the previous tiers (e.g. if you pass exam 5, you automatically pass exams 1-4. If you pass exam 2, you automatically pass exam 1. etc.).

Here is a breakdown of how the questions are divided based on the cluster.

This was for safety reasons, of course. The rest of the implements were store largest to smallest, with largest starting on the left side of the second drawer. There were enough items to fill all 4 drawers and then some, and the directions did not specify where to store overflow. So, Margaret simply tossed the extra tool on the desk and left them for the next shift.

Scoring and Retest Limits

A passing score on the Alberta AIT is a 70% or higher. This score is a cumulative, weighted grade. This means that certain sections or questions may be worth more toward your average than others. This weighting is usually determined by your instructor/ trainer.

If you score below the minimum, you may be able to retake the test. If you are in the middle of a training course, a failure may be grounds for removal from the course. This is determined by your instructor. If you are taking the exam in an attempt to bypass the need for coursework, you can only test twice before you will be required to enroll in a course.
